How to clean rug it's looking grupy

Hi all our lounge rug is quite a light colour and although we are a shoe free house it's looking a little grupy where people have walked on it etc..was wondering best way to clean it..I was thinking abitnof washing up liquid and warm water and just giving it a good scrub? Any advice would be great..I know I could hire a carpet cleaner but would rather not

Don't know really but I'd go for laundry detergent or stuff like Sturgene (designed for hand washing woollens and delicates) rather than washing up liquid. It should rinse away more easily. I think liquids rinse more easily than powder too but that's just my take. Don't use too much cleaner or it'll take forever to rinse. Maybe stick it in the bath if it's a floppy rug, and hand wash, or outside on decking or patio with a broom to scrub if it's more rigid?

People say Persil small and mighty works in rug doctor machines, so that might be an option for your hand washing too.
