Tips while living in chaos!

Does anyone have any tips on keeping a house clean and tidy/organised while renovating?

We moved into a house that needs quite a bit of work doing to it and I'm at a loss with how to keep on top of the mess and dust.

We've done the majority of the work in the living room and kids bedrooms and now have ripped out the kitchen and taken it mostly back to bare brick. It's been re boarded and we are almost ready for plastering.

Wondering if others had any tips or routines they used while trying to live in a building site that can save my sanity!

Lower your standards and be prepared to clean regularly to keep on top of things. Ask the builder and plasterer to mix plasterboard adhesive and plaster outside. They won't think twice about doing it inside whilst the place is a shell, but it adds to the mess through the house if they don't do it outside. Ask them to cover the floor too.

Keep as many doors closed as much of the time as possible, this will save the dust travelling room to room.

Use as few rooms as you possibly can, seal others off with masking tape.

Dust sheets over furniture.

Wipe surfaces over with a damp cloth to actually pick debris up.

Keep the long term goal in mind, it'll get you through.

Drink or often.

Unfortunately you will have to sweep up everyday otherwise the mess will just travel around the house.

Use dust sheets on things and shake the dust off outside from the sheets at the end of the day.

Keep all doors closed. Put sheets down to cover the bottom of the doors to limit dust going to rooms from under the door.

Ask the builders to try and do as much work in rooms which have not been finished to limit the mess. If they can do it outside or in the garage even better.

Try and pack away a lot of stuff and put them in the loft so you won't have loads of stuff to clean.

Less clutter means less stuff to clean.

Once while house is finished then get the packed stuff. Out.
