Need a new mattress but don't know where to begin.

Ours needs replacing, it was a cheap one we bought and it's had it. I've been looking around but haven't really got a clue where to start. Where does everyone but them from?

I think you have to at least go into a shop and try them out. Take plenty of time. I just replaced an old Harrison mattress with a new one. Absolutely fab.

Ikea!!! Mine is the second cheapest spring mattress (about £130 for king size) and it's fab. Had it just over a year now and no sagging. Still as comfy as the day I got it.

I'm not very clued up on ikea as the nearest one is over an hours drive. Do they do regular size mattresses?

I only discovered this yesterday. Someone had a spanking nearly new mattress for sale for a good price £300 for a £1200 one.
Admittedly not everyone would want a second hand mattress, But , with a good thorough clean......

Really you need to get a new base as well as a new mattress as you do get some support from the frame which also degrades over time. I spent £400 on a John Lewis mattress two years ago which was half price because they were bringing in a new range. I paired it with a £350 frame. Reading between the lines on the description I could tell that it was a Hypnos mattress so good quality and ordered online without trying it.

Two years in and its still the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. The only problem is that I'm now I'm always aching to get home from holidays because the beds aren't quite as good as ours!

Go and test out mattresses before you order and try and see what you like. Firm, medium firm, medium or soft. I don't really like memory foam so went for a pocket sprung with as many springs as I could afford. I personally wouldn't go for a coil sprung mattress as you feel every movement from the other person in the bed.

And make sure you look after the mattress. Turn it each week for about three months when you first get it to help the padding settle evenly then turn at least once a quarter after that. I turn mine every month because its easier to remember and because I'm quite fat and don't want to end up with a massive dip in one side of the bed!

Do you get to test the Laura Ashley ones out anywhere? I know I'm jumping on the back of your thread, sorry (!) but we desperately need a new mattress as ours is 10 years old but I want to try one first. We spent a good deal of money on it back then ~£1000 for a king size pocket sprung with memory foam topping but went for a slighter different spring count than the one we tested in the shop and we decided it was too firm but kept it and 10 years on I don't want to make the same mistake again!

No we didn't. Know it's a risk but the old one was really cheap and it's been with us for 11 years. I'm sort of praying that it's got to be better than that and it was 100's cheaper than the regular size.

Size = price. Not pissed. Honest!
