How to remove a sticky mess from a carpet

Today I've noticed something sticky on DDS carpet. I think it's calpol medicine and it's made the carpet hard and looks really ground in. The pile looks different.
Instead of telling me she's conveniently placed her bin over it.

Does anyone have any idea how to get this out?

I'd just use very warm water and a white cloth. Dab firmly working from the outside in, changing to a clean part of the cloth regularly. Keep going until you're not seeing dirt on the cloth any more.
