mold in a let house

I am having problems with leaks and now mold in our house. The landlord has refused to fix saying it's just a cosmetic fix. I'm not sure why mold which is now growing on the ceiling is considered cosmetic. I've even had the local council in who said I should just wash it with bleach. Perhaps being American I am just not used to this - mold is serious to us and seems the norm here. Is it my responsibility or the landlord? Thanks!!

Depends why it's there. Do you air the house frequently, opening the windows? Do you use a tumble drier, do you dry clothes on radiators?

It depends upon whether the mould is caused due to structural defects or lifestyle.

If structural problems such as a leaking roof or gutters are causing the problem it is up to the landlord to fix.

If it is caused by lifestyle issues, such as not ventilating the house, drying washing inside etc it's up to the tenant to resolve. That said I would still expect a bathroom to have a good quality extractor fan and the ceiling to be painted in anti mould paint for example to help in prevention.

We don't dry clothes in the house on radiators etc. We have several windows open all year long. The wall and ceiling in the bathroom does not have a window or a fan/extractor. There was a leak on a pipe on the outside wall which caused the mold. We have a several year lease so moving is not really an option right now. Thanks all.

Ask the landlord to install an extractor in the bathroom.

I wish they would install one, but they won't even sort the stains from leaks, and now the mold. I don't understand it all, I've never experienced anything like this before. The house has serious cracks that keep appearing but they are not phased
