How do I get rid of damp smell?

We've had a ceiling leakage from bath above it upstairs. It leaked into a small closet we have downstairs. The carpet got all wet etc. The room was aired and all dried up, we've also just had the ceiling all newly replastered. But the smell of damp still lingers in the closet and it's now clinging to all the coats hanging in there. Short of changing the carpet (which has long dried out) is there anything we do to get rid of the smell?

You could use those "penguin" bags of crystals that absorb damp from the air, but for the smell you'll just have to keep ventilating it and leave a source of perfume

A source of perfume like a gel stick or a spray on a timer.
But the smell is usually from lingering damp, so drying out is the main thing.

Thanks. It's definitely dried out, it was in December.

I'd second drying it out, you might be surprised how damp things stay, even if they feel dry.
But you could sprinkle bicarb and leave it overnight to help rid the smell (you might find it feels a bit damp by morning)
