I use fabric conditioner, so why are my towels still so crusty and hard??

Help! Apart from them being really uncomfortable to use, I'm tired of being embarrased by my them whenever I have guests. Any advice?

the vinegar thing didn't work

Before the days of my tumble dryer, I used to dry towels on a clothes horse in our bathroom because it was really warm. For some reason they were never hard after.
But if I dried them on the radiator they would be.
Weird.

Yes, I too found them hard if I dried them near the radiator. But I'm truly surprised that facric conditioners are a big no-no for towels. And to think I've been using them especially for towels!

Limescale? It's not a North South thing, Cheshire water is hard, Lancashire always soft. I assume Staffordshire water is also hard.

The thread is 10 years. Why are you reinstating it?

Hard towels have not gone away in a decade, and maybe the technology has moved on.

I love them when they are fresh and crisp.
