How to clean a wicker basket

Hi, I've got a large wicker basket/chest thing with a lid (can take lid off). It came from a late relative's house who was a heavy smoker and liked sented candles.

problem is it smells of all the sented candles and when you wipe with a wet wipe it comes away brown (imagining this is tabco build up).

What's the best way to clean it. I also want to paint it white is it best to spray paint it how would you do it?

Thanks

Brush then Steam cleaner.

Fill the bath with fairy liquid and submerge.

Rinse with the shower, fill bath again with bicarbonate and water. Submerge and dry in the sun.

i just scrub them with soapy water and let them dry out in the garden...or in front of the range.

and for painting I have just used emulsion...don't put too much on the brush and work it in well....several thin layers look better than a big gloopy drippy layer.

Thanks would you recommend emulsion over spray paint?

i would, but i don't get on with spray cans of paint...it never goes as far as you think and it costs a fortune!
