Smart CD storage boxes needed (not from IKEA), any ideas?

I need to get some boxes to store our CDs in to stop my DS from breaking all the cases. IKEA not an option as we live really far away. Would like some which look stylish, perhaps in woven/pandan type material but can't justify spending £15-20 on each box as per the Holding Company etc. Any suggestions anyone please?

If you have loads of cd's like we do, think outside the box - literally! CD boxes are rubbish as they hold x amount and you'll always end up with x + 2!

A friend in Chicago had his in a large glass fronted cabinet.

We have at least 500 cds and as they were ever expanding I put spur shelving in the alcoves round our fire place and shelved it.

As it grew I took an Ikea idea of putting a 'step' at the back (like to expand kitchen storage) so we could put more on one shelf. It also stopped the place looking like a library.

DH stopped me putting doors on but MIL knicked my idea and did it to her's.
Now 1 alcove is DVDs and the TV and the pther is CD's except the bottom 2 shelves which is now DS's toy storage baskets. Thankfully the only CDs he is ever interested in are 'The Velvet Underground and Nico' he's 3 and I blame Wahol's banana cover personally. It cost about £30 for the spurs and £20 for the MDF for shelves and steps.

Oh I'm rambling now... sorry.

Basically, don't think mimsy ickle boxes, think big storage and it doesn't have to be expensive either.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately we already have alcove shelves which we need to use to store the CDs and at the mo my DS pull them all out and damages the cases and swaps all the CDs around, very disconcerting! So I need something to hold all the CDs in which will make it harder for him (no room to add doors to the shelves either) which is why I thought of boxes. Also thought out of sight out of mind. We don't have huge numbers to store but do need to contain them before they all get trashed.... Hence the search for the best boxes I can find which is proving surprisingly hard! Anyone else have any ideas?

Ok...so you basically need to 'hide' them away

(Oooh, coming across all Linda Barker here)

There are loads of options and they're not all from IKEA. Or check eBay as they'll get delivered. Or have a scoot round. Tesco have some good storage solutions in store for example. Big plastic lidded boxes that you can slide away for example

A good start is to get hold of an IKEA catalogue for ideas. There are tons of places who flog similar items.

Just cos it's for CD's don't just think CD storage.

And a DS detterant...has he got CDs of his own? Give him his own cd/tape box with his ones in. It might stop him from trawling/trashing yours. It worked for us

Thanks again, have looked at IKEA catalogue but do want sth which looks smart (our sitting room is quite formal). Looked on ebay too but is v little on there for some reason. DS has his own CDs and player in his room, but yes great idea to put some of his with the others in a special box, thou he is a right mischief so not sure if it will work but def worth a try and thanks again!

Formal....hmmmm

How about a coffee table with drawers? or a small cabinet with drawers. You could lock the drawers and they won't be obtrusive.

God it's years since I did this, it's great!

Pannacotta -- my Tesco recently had some really nice leather ones for a good price. The online store down at the mo'

Thanks will check out Tesco. Does need to be boxes I can fit on existing shelves, would love a coffee table/chest but no room for this... Wish my DS was not so interested in technology....
