Please Help - Oven Cleaning Disaster! Aghhh

I bought a beautiful new Smeg stainless oven on ebay (couldn't afford it new!).

Was a bit mucky so painted strong caustic oven cleaner all over it. It has brought all the chrome and stainless steel up great.

BUT....the metal hob bit (the bits that are over the gas jets on the hob) seem to be made of a different metal (seems duller - maybe aluminium?) and this has gone all black and tarnished. EEEEKKKSS.

Does anyone know of any solution or restorer that might help / rescuse me!!

Any thoughts much appreciated.

oops - i did similar to mine and unfortunately, it was like that for life - i did scrub it with a brillo pad though to give it a more dulled steel look and thats the best it ever did. shite really when you think we were only trying to 'help' the oven by cleaning the thing!

ask smeg you might be able to get replacements cheap.
