Keeping carpet clean

So I live in a first floor flat, trying to train ds to wipe his feet every time we come in, but my carpeted stairs are constantly filthy! It's a beigey coloured carpet and I do try to stay on top of it but omg it's just vile all the time. What's the best thing I can clean it with, or do I bite the bullet and rip the carpet up completely? Feel like I'm fighting a losing battle. There's only space to open and close front door in the downstairs 'hallway' so taking shoes off down there (with a 4yo, his lunchbox, nursery bag, my handbag, random shopping etc in hand) is not really feasible. Help!!!!

You need one of these! Shoes in, carry all your stuff upstairs, then it can live on the top step. Carry it down when you go out.

They neatly fit on the stairs so won't block your hallway- we had one in our old house where we had a very tight hall.
