Decluttering in 2017- A carrier bag a day

I read about this method in 2015 and gave it a try last year, it was mostly sucessful and I kept a track of what I had got rid of on my phone. It was interesting to look back at the end of the year to realise I missed none of it!

I'd like to do it all again for 2017, perhaps even more committed this year!

I like lots of the other decluttering methods such as KonMarie or Flylady and do incorporate many of their rules but I also know that getting rid of a carrier bag a day is easier for me to fit in to my life.

I'm a childminder working 4 days a week 8-6pm and have 3 dc of my own, 13,10 and 6. Dh is a shift worker so our lives are busy and the house can get out of control quickly with the mindees and my job.

I'm looking for anyone to join me, anyone who likes the idea of decluttering but always feels they fail as they don't have the time. This is literally one carrier bag a day, either a large item like a toy or a quick sort out of a kitchen drawer whilst waiting for the kettle to boil. Just trying to stay on top of the flow of stuff that constantly enters our home.

January 1st and I have got rid of two plants on my kitchen that we're dying. I was desperately trying to keep them alive but realise I'm crap and that and they depress me every time I see them.

Anyone else? Smile

You don't realise the space your wasting until you reorganise - doing great Katymac!

katymac · 08/02/2017 15:39

Sadly May, all of them were in the attic......so I have no extra room - lust loads of extra storage space

PenelopeFlintstone · 08/02/2017 21:32

katymac Grin

My job for today will be sorting a year's worth of PTA papers; it is actually in a bag. Then I'll put the bag in the car and that will be my bag out the house for today.

katymac · 08/02/2017 22:27

What today as in after 9:30 today? you're hardcore!!! Respect!

PenelopeFlintstone · 09/02/2017 03:38

Less respect deserved - I'm in Australia so it's morning! Grin

Vinorosso74 · 09/02/2017 19:48

Just returned after losing my way a bit. DD birthday all over now and actually didn't create too much extra stuff.
Another charity shop bag ready to drop off tomorrow and another of some old clothes for textiles bin. Finally got pram together, photographed in it's various poses and put ad on Gumtree this afternoon.

katymac · 09/02/2017 21:43

I have totally deconstructed DD's room - flatpacked her wardrobe & bed, I'm gettig a double bed frame down from the attic to replace her single

It is a total tip

PenelopeFlintstone · 09/02/2017 23:23

I'm also supposed to doing my daughter's room, and I've got her some new Malm drawers and a couple of new flatpack cupboards, but her room is so messy that we can't get the old stuff out to get the new stuff in. Here's a picture of a mountain of pillows she built just to make it worse for fun.

PenelopeFlintstone · 09/02/2017 23:32

I've decided my job for today is to make a step-by-step master plan for getting that room sorted and painted. Lots of carrier bags will go out the door in the process, but I've just realised I need a plan first because of the scale of the job. Just having that idea of a plan, not even a plan, makes it feel immediately more manageable!

katymac · 10/02/2017 08:52

How are you doing?

I keep wondering about a master list, then remember how big the job is & realise the master list would be enormous!!

PenelopeFlintstone · 10/02/2017 09:41

Thanks for asking. Well, I wrote a bit of a list and removed all cushions which she's collected from other rooms, thus removing a third of the room's contents. Ha ha. I exaggerate Grin
The room's got a second door onto a sunroom. I've moved everything out of the way of that door. Through that door will exit the old furniture and enter the new! Then I have to build the flatpacks, but I don't mind that.
I did get a "Wow!" when she came hone from school though and then pissed off straight out again

PenelopeFlintstone · 10/02/2017 09:43

Have you got a challenge for the day? Anyone else? Smile

May09Bump · 10/02/2017 09:43

My masterplan woulds also be enormous! Another packing box full of paper, more boxes etc - out the door.
