tumble dryer balls - do they work?

hi

have you seen the ad for those tumble dryer balls, they are supposed to make laundry soft by breaking the stiffness down, also reduce the time the dryer's on by moving the laundry around. before i spend a tenner on a pair of them, the question is, to anyone who's tried them, do they do what it says on the ad? thanks

Hello I was given a set of these foc when I bought my tumble dryer (about 6mths ago) and as far as I can tell they work - but I have never had a dryer before so have no idea what the laundry would be like without them....

softmusk · 16/02/2007 11:08

i have some of these find them really good no need for softener and they do cut time

TwoToTango · 16/02/2007 11:20

Agree with softmusk - definately one of the best tenners I have spent. got the JML ones from ebay but have seen the same ones in woolworths

PrettyCandles · 16/02/2007 11:23

Adding a tennis ball or two, or an old (clean!) child's shoe, does the same job.

softmusk · 16/02/2007 11:24

think they do the jml ones all over i got mine in asda my sis got hers in boots (and get points)

rookiemum · 19/02/2007 19:26

I don't know if they cut any time, but they certainly make the clothes softer

hk78 · 20/02/2007 00:44

hmmm i'll give 'em a try! cheap white vinegar in the softener compartment really softens as well btw.

hiya
just to update
decided to try the tennis balls in the dryer as they were cheaper than the proper dryer balls.

since that time, i've had a new tumble dryer because the old one started making terrible clunking noises and then it er,........died.

it's probably just a coincidence........

Have to say I've been using the dryer balls for about a month now and I've not noticed any difference! Clothes aren;t any softer than before (don;t use fabric conditioner) and they drying time doesn;t seem to haev lessened either!

geekgrrl · 28/04/2007 17:44

they seem to make FA difference to my laundry, too. And I'd bought them in Lakeland for a fortune...

Daisybump · 28/04/2007 17:59

all they do is pummel the clothes, breaking down the fibres and lessening further the life of the garment than tumble drying does on its own....IMHO

whomovedmychocolate · 28/04/2007 18:00

I use them and yes they make a difference with our (condensor) dryer. About 30% less time.

whomovedmychocolate · 28/04/2007 18:01

geekgrrl - did you buy them in the last six months? If so, call them and they'll give you a refund. Lakeland are nice like that - the title to goods stays with them for six months so if something doesn't work for you they refund it. They did the same with my bread box after three months and didn't want it back.

AitchTwoOh · 28/04/2007 18:02

we have a condensor dryer too and i think they make a difference. don't know the time, but the cupboard-dry setting is fine now whereas it used to be a bit on the damp side.

SleeplessInTheStaceym11House · 28/04/2007 18:32

well i brought mine the other day and now my load dries in 60 mins not 80, so i'd say it makes a difference!

geekgrrl · 30/04/2007 10:41

thanks whomovedmychocolate, I'll try that. have chucked the receipt but hopefully they'll just give a voucher or something...

I've got to admit we love ours. We bought them from Klaisen a few weeks ago. They do cut the drying time and fluff up clothes but most importantly for us our DD has stopped getting rashes due to the the liquids we were using before. They even survived the dog nicking them out of the dryer a few times lol.
