DH and I trying to watch uni challenge and we hear a scratching sound above our heads. Went to check the hamster hadn't escaped again and he was all present and correct in his cage.

DH brings the floorboards up where we heard the noise and he can't find anything. I've phoned rentokil and they don't investigate noises...they only investigate droppings, sightings etc. But I know what I heard. Confused

Any advice? I'm terrified!

MrsA I know it's not nice catching them. I do feel horrible about it. You can get humane traps now. But apparently if you do catch them live you have to take them quite a distance from the house to release them, otherwise they'll just get back in.

That would be a problem I'm in a built up area with small park nearby, they'd eventually come back I'm next to a few restaurants tooSad
I had a cat here for a little while and she caught a couple on her first night but we had to rehome her (now living with my aunt in the middle of the Yorkshire dales!) And they came back within a week

We've had two field mice we caught and one that clearly died under the floor and could smell it, was deeply unpleasant.

We also have bats, and we can hear them scratching their way in and out through the walls. The previous owners never mentioned we had bats, which I think legally they are obliged to do, so it was a bit eeky, when we first started hearing things in the walls as we tried to sleep. Now we see them coming in and out. They squeeze through the tiniest of spaces.

Dh was adamant that we had bats in the extension roof space until the lighting wires got chewed through 😡
Put traps in the attic and have caught 8 mice in 12 days using peanut butter as a bribe.
They can squeeze through a space the thickness of a pencil......🐭 little buggers!
