Oops I broke the microwave - sterilising a sponge

Oopsie. I read on the internet that you can sterilize cloths and sponges in the microwave - it takes about 2 minutes to sterilize a damp cloth or sponge.
I've don't this a fair few times - never occurred to me (until it was too late) to put the sponge into a container - I just put it down on the glass turntable

Only today just over a minute in there was the most almighty bang - the glass turntable had exploded

I'm guessing you need to put your cloth or sponge in a microwave-proof dish

or avoid trying to sterilize sponges in the microwave...

I think I'd generally be inclined to boil cloths up in a saucepan anyway (it's very satisfying Grin)

Fwiw I clean my microwave by heating a bit of water & washing-up liquid in a ramekin & then wiping down the soapy condensation. I generally do it in 30-second bursts but once did it for somewhat longer & there was an almighty bang & it blew the fuse of the whole downstairs ring main Shock

Dangerous buggers, microwaves

You might just need a new turntable.

I only give my sponges 20s, they still get too hot to touch, so I think 2 mins is probably too long.

Are you looking to get another microwave? You can get a reasonably priced microwave here that won't explode lol.

I just buy new sponges.
