Anyone ever put a sheepskin rug in the washing machine?

Ours is revolting, nearly threw it away today, but thought I may give it ago in the washing machine on a cool wool cycle - anyone ever tried it...?

I have. The wool was fine once I'd combed it, but it buggered the skin.

MIL suggested oiling it.

Will watch this thread for expert tips.

yes - with a few different ones. Generally fairly successful, some more than others, some go a bit knotty but others actually improved in fluffiness. Def worth a go if your alternative is to throw it away!

I shampooed 2 sheepskin cushions in the bath - took an age to dry but looked ok after part-drying with hairdryer

Right, thank you. I'm going to give it ago. I really don't love it enough to shampoo it in the bath Whizzz, so in the machine it goes

I wash mine all the time in the delicate wool cycle. Use wool wash detergent. Also make sure you lay it flat to dry to stop the skin from stretching. Comes up beautiful both skins are 10 years old.

I found the better the quality of wool the better the results. First grade NZ beats the Australian lambskin everytime.

I once shampooed a sporran too

As cc says use wool shampoo and wool cycle then "fluff it uP" AND dry flat no probs must have done mine 20 times (myself 2 sibs and my 2 have all slept on same welsh lambs skin)

PanicPants · 10/02/2007 22:14

Ok - no tumble drying!

I used conditioner too

I have too. Came out fine after normal wash and spin but no tumble. Brush well with wire brush before lying flat to dry.
