Dip and strip alternative

I have an old set of solid wood drawers that have been in the family for years - don't think they are of value but I like the look of them so was going to get them dipped and stripped, mainly to remove the musty/smoky smell

The local dip/strip joint is no longer here - can I tackle this at home and if so, what with and how?

Any stuff I've done has been:
Sugar soap scrub down
Sand
Sugar soap scrub down
Sand
Wipe down
Paint.

Thankfully we've not had anything too honking yet, so can't guarantee it'll work but good luck!

Will give that a go first and see how it dries

You can get amazing chalk paint now and paint straight onto wood without sanding, I've just done all our old bedroom furniture and it looks amazing!

I am so tempted by the chalk paint! - did you use Annie Sloan or Rustoleum? ...and is it as idiot proof as people say - I am rubbish at decorating

Neither , I use Ann Howard.. it's the only one that doesn't need waxing.

Easy as pie you just slap it on! No sanding or stripping...

I've done all my boring dark wood bedroom furniture in a lovely linen colour...it looks amazing and has changed my life!

Ooo not heard of that one - off to find out more - I'm liking the 'slap it on' approach

it's genius i tell you. my furniture was quite dark wood so it needed three coats - but each coat dries really quickly. the final piece is the super king bed which i'm doing next week. it's totally transformed and brings me a lot of joy!

If so, please could you tell me if any of the chalk paints are white? The ones that look as if they should be are showing up pink on my screen.

I do mean Amy Howard (sorry!) and yes there's a white. I actually used linen which is a lovely off white...best thing to do is find a stocking and go look. They have good tester pots.

This soap oil is kind of similar to sugar soap but it's specifically made for wood cleaning. You can use this cleaner at home to clean your wood drawers.

Where did you find the Amy Howard? I've been looking for it and can't find out how to buy it...
