Can't rid of urine smell in the carpet

Either my cat or puppy weed on the carpet and it dried before we realised.

We've wet hoovered the carpet and shake n vac'd three times each and the smell is still there. The windows were open all day yesterday and will be today. The smell seems to dissipate after a treatment but then is back again.

Any ideas please would be helpful. Doesn't help that we can't find the exact spot.

Bicarb ..Its best if you can do a paste and rub into the spot ..check angles of chairs , sofas and corners as well as it might be on there. Bicarb , loads and loads leave and hoover.

Biological washing powder. Use it instead of carpet shampoo.

it probably soaked into the underlayer/floor underneath. which means that it's never going away.

as last resort try hiring a rug doctor and buy the carpet shampoo that's supposed to eliminate pet odours.

Thank you everyone. I'll try all that. We use a wet hoovered so no need to hire a rug doctor. I was annoyed when he bought it but it's more than paid for itself.

I better get on my knees and do some sniffing.

The best stuff I've ever used was called simple solution. We got it from the vets but you can buy it online. They do different versions for hard floors and carpets. I think it uses enzymes and there are other brands too but I haven't used those so don't know if they all work as well.

We used washing powder to get cat pee out of a sofa, seems to have done the trick

we had a visiting dog who had a massive diarhea accident on my brand new pale living room carpet. I got the colour stain out but the smell was awful.

we tried everything, but the thing that got it out in the end (recommended by mn) was an amazing product called 'Simple Solution - stain and odour remover'

I could only find it in Pets At Home and it certainly wasn't cheap, but it was amazing. We recently dog sat a puppy who had a couple of accident, I sprayed this on and there is no smell at all.

We've also used the simple solution. I made the mistake of trying it on an old stain (only a day or three old) and it has left a worse stain.

Just sniffed the whole floor and furniture and even where I know the puppy weed it doesn't smell anywhere . wonders if it's me

Given I haven't a specific stain would scattering bicarbonate and/or non biological detergent all over the carpet then hoovering up work?

The simple solution has worked to a degree but the issue must be a wee when I wasn't there that dried before I went in the room.

I use bio detergent then Mr Muscle pet Odour destroyer,works really well.

If you have carpets then they probably needed lifting as the underlay will have been soaked.

You can be UV lights cheaply to identify where the pee is.

My cat and DC have previously taken turns to pee on carpets. Cat was worst out the two and funnily enough was in said children's room! Poor things went to bed each night in a waft if ammonia.

I googled and found out how to get rid and it worked! Mix warm water, a little washing powder and a load of white vinegar. I forget exact amount but only say a small capful of washing powder with a litre of water and a third of a litre of white vinegar. Slosh generously over the area (honestly don't be stingy as you need it to soak through to underlay). Leave it a good couple of days to ensure its dry. Then if white vinegar smells potent all you have to do is sprinkle bicarb of soda generously over, leave about half a day then hoover up (make sure area dry for sure before sprinkle).

The white vinegar kills the ammonia smell and the bicarb soaks up the white vinegar and any other smells. Bicarb sprinkled over carpets and hoovered periodically is great for general spring clean but in your case it's essential you remove the ammonia from deep in carpet first.

This is cheap and totally effective (only gotta Google it to see!)

Ps you don't have to add washing powder (I just convinced myself it was worth a shot out of desperation...haha!)

I use this spray when my dog decides to do a wee in the living room lol. A couple of spray with this will get rid of the odor.

Soaking the carpet is going to be tricky. Best wait to see what dh says about that. He is coming round to a laminate type flooring though. We had that when we first moved in as the previous owners left a disgusting carpet but we took that up and put carpet down when one of my children had problems and we needed a soft floor.

Just to say - I used simple solution on a dried stain, and it worked well. I did use a lot, and I did have to repeat, and it was on a place with underlay, so I sprayed enough to soak right down.

I think your problem is that you cannot find the place where the wee was.

Could it be that they have sprayed against the furniture? The worst pet smell I had I eventually isolated to a spray against a wall. Easy to clean off, but invisible once dry and I only found it sort of by accident, having been driven made by the smell for weeks.

place marking, I have a puppy who has the odd accident and a vising dog for three weeks who is scent marking whenever she pee's, my jouse smells like a urinal, i do have a cheap b and m one that hides the smell for a few days but not brilliant, and not seeing the point of doing much except for spot cleaning until visiting dog goes home.

I would try a multipronged approach of: biological washing powder and vinegar - let it dry - then a proper carpet steam cleaner that will drag the water out of the carpet and deal with the stains - let it dry - then Zoflora.

It might be worth purchasing a carpet cleaner - I have a Bissell one and it's brilliant for being able to get all kinds of muck out of carpets, and saves on hiring machines constantly.

The stain should show up under uv light, the pet shop may sell uv torches so you can find it to treat

I haven't sniffed the walls but will do so later as have to go out shortly.

I don't know where the smell is and I have a wet hoover. Just for those that may only have read the OP.

Daft question - since puppy is a girl could she spray up the wall? I'd have thought not but happy to be corrected.

She'd had an accident in the kitchen and wet one of her toys. Toy has been washed three times and is airing more outside. Room smells fine again.
