Septic tank!!!

marmalade999 · 02/10/2016 07:51

We are moving to a house with a septic tank. I feel sick knowing I can't get the bleach out as I think the house will be rather grotty when we move in. Is there anything that's a good substitute??

Check toilet cleaning products. They will say if OK to use with a septic tank.

Most bleach says it's ok to use with a septic tank but I wouldn't. We use Ecover stuff which is great

SecretMongoose · 02/10/2016 20:34

We have a septic tank, it does take a bit of getting used to. If I were you I'd get a steam cleaner, that gets rid of grot very effectively.
With that and normal detergent, you'll be fine.

daisygirlmac · 02/10/2016 20:40

Oh and you probably already know but do NOT put anything down which isn't toilet roll. It isn't worth it I promise Grin

justaweeone · 02/10/2016 20:45

We have one
Use bleach all the time
It's ok !
Have been there 12 years

marmalade999 · 02/10/2016 20:57

Thanks!! I love the smell of bleach knowing it's killing those nasties!! It's going to take some feeling use too I think!!! I'll be purchasing a steam cleaner I think. Any recommendations? Wink
Also looking out for ecover stuff. I think my husband would be right P1ssed off if I used anything that would aggravate it x

I wouldn't risk it. From what i understand is the septic tank gets wrecked it can cost a small fortune to put right again.

sonias27 · 03/10/2016 08:51

For a steam cleaner, you've gotta go with a VAX S7, i love mine to bits it does a grand job.

You can use bleach, just don't go nuts.

myusernamewastaken · 06/10/2016 16:56

Ive had a septic tank for 12 years and i use bleach...why am i not meant to?

DollyBarton · 06/10/2016 17:09

Same here myusername. Oops.

My husband worked in wastewater management. He uses bleach to clean our water pipes (we're on well water) twice a year. It all goes into our septic with no problems. As he says 'The solution to pollution (or bleach) is dilution'. Just don't pour a gallon of straight bleach down the loo and be sure you flush a goodly amount of water after you clean the loo with bleach or any strong cleaner.

justaweeone · 06/10/2016 22:46

We have one and use bleach
No problems in over 12 years

specialsubject · 07/10/2016 14:17

Not too much difference from.mains - nothing down the toilet except body waste and bog roll. Nothing else is flushable - packets lie.

Nothing down sink except waste water - no grease , no coffee grounds, no waste disposal unit. Again, same as mains.

Get it wrong and you will pay the financial and smell penalty, so every incentive!
