I'm SO EXCITED. I'm going to be part of the food waste recycling trial in my area

sad I know but I've wanted a composter for ages and dp says no cos mice/rats and what to do with compost after (I'm def. not a gardener) but now the council are going to give me a nice little box for my food waste and collect it every week - YEAY!!! I hope it takes off and they roll it out. Can't wait for my bin to arrive.

Oh brill, I would so love that.

We go onto alternate week collections this week, so am a bit nervous about that. Food recycling would make it totally possible tho.

What do they actually do with it?

We have our first roadside glass collection this week too I believe, I hope so my blue basket is overflowing

We do this. Scape the plate it's called. You won't enjoy it so much in the height of summer and that stinking bin is in your front garden full of rotting food!

makes me heave.

I live in Bexley borough - best borough in London for recyling apparently. Glass, tins, bottles, food and garden waste. And where are they building a new waste incinerator? Yep, Bexley borough. To burn waste from West London. GRRRRRR

sorry... I'm ranting a lot tonight!

So they take cooked food? I thought that's what attracted the rats etc?

pianist · 05/02/2007 22:38

Ours take cooked food now - they've just changed the rules.

Kbear · 05/02/2007 22:39

It's in a brown lidded wheely bin. Used to be just peelings etc but now it's all food. They empty weekly.

PeachesMcLean · 05/02/2007 22:42

That's good. They've only just started collecting garden waste here.

FatFikAndFugly · 06/02/2007 09:38

We've been on fornightly collections for a good while now (summer was bad at times, one week fortnight we got maggots - bleurgh).

Our will tak ecooked and raw food waste, think it will be better, get a little tub to keep in the kitchen and a big one to keep outside that's emptied weekly - should be ok as long as it seals tight.

I already have my wheelie bin cleaned monthly so think I will get him to do this one too. I don't bopther getting my recylcing bin cleand as everything in it is clean anyway.

they collect our garden waste with the normal recylcing.

The only thing that annoys me is they don't collect glass.

We can now put food waste in our brown bin - wrap it in newspaper first. What with recycling cardboard, paper, glass and plastic, composting our veg peelings and now the food waste thing, our black bin is less than half full every fortnight. And the kitchen bin is smell free - yippee!

Go for it fatfik (sure you'ere not btw)
