Recommend a nice kitchen bin

Because my life is that exciting - my two threads are about dish draining racks and bins. :)

I have a big cylindrical metal bin (maybe stainless steel) that's about 6 years old. It always looks dirty on the outside and it often smells which I'm putting down to the fact it's probably slightly too big so would be better off with something slightly smaller that gets emptied more often. It opens with a pedal and the pedal stopped working properly years ago.

Can someone recommend me a bin that's easy to keep clean, not tiny but not massive, and ideally cream? I'm wary of just picking one randomly in case all the metal ones get this dirty look about them like mine.

I'm not sure how well the sensor bins work and whether they would just annoy me (used one at a friends and it refused to open for me), but equally not keen on the ones you have to push the lid for. A pedal bin probably is best in that case but not if they just break! Is it a theme with pedal bins that they give up, or just mine?

And I have seen the Joseph Jospeh Totem bin, but can't afford it!

We have a Brabantia bin and although expensive the customer service is fantastic. We've had ours for about 10 years now and it looks as good as new. The lid did break once and they sent us a brand new one completely free.

I bought a plastic cream swing bin in the end for the same reasons. It fills quickly but that means changed quickly and very easy to clean and keep clean. My metal one was horrid though I never knew Brabantia would have replaced it -more fool me!

I have that Joseph Joseph bin - for a bin, I do really like it. But boy, its so expensive - we got it in the middle of a big extension and was spending so much on the build, decorating, a new kitchen, new furniture and new crockery/kitchen stuff/accessories, so it kind of just blended in - £200 in the scheme of things was small. DH would never had agreed without the rest, ha ha!

I have the Joseph Joseph Totem bin too. And yes, it is expensive, but like Hula, I bought it when I had the kitchen redone so it didn't seem too bad at the time. I've never regretted the spend though - it's a good bin if you don't have the space for lots separate bins for recycling etc.

We have these from Ikea. Not a pedal bin and they are cheap and cheerful but honestly the best bins we've ever had. We have three different sizes. The big one for main bin, medium sized one for plastic recycling and the smaller one for paper.

Simplehuman. Expensive but solidly built. Got mine in Debenhams sale for third of normal price in sale and buy the expensive but super strong liners in bulk box from Amazon and find you can cram it full -bags so strong they compact down lots of rubbish! Dead easy to clean, look like new five years on.

Have been looking at some Brabantia ones - very nice but also expensive (started eyeing up the Orla Kiely one but can I really spend that much on a bin?!).

Which Simplehuman one do you recommend?

I can see how the IKEA one is easy to clean but for practical reasons it will do my head in to have to lift a lid by hand as I've often got my hands full so I think pedal or automatic lids it will have to be. And though I wouldn't usually care, it is in quite a prominent position due to a tiny kitchen so I will try to avoid plain plastic ones and go for something that also looks really nice to take the edge off the fact there's a bin sitting where it ideally wouldn't be!

My hubby brought me a curver metal bin for out kitchen. It has a 40 litre capacity and it looks really sleek and goes well with our kitchen.

This is the simple human I've got - looks fantastic and v robust

We have a Wesco Kickboy bullet bin which I think comes in various sizes and ours is cream. It's hugely expensive but we've had ours for 16 years. You can scrub down the outside.

Brabantia slim 30 litres. I have this one. Looks great and functions well. I got it cheaper than in that link, from Dunelm.
