Tips? Leggings elastic driving me crackers!

Proud new owner of mother's shameful comfy trousers. They have a wide band of elastic and every time they are washed, the elastic folds in half and gets all taffled in its tunnel. Anyone got a quick fix so I don't end up having to constantly sort it? Thanks!

Use a large safety pin oppposite the seam it is sewn into, two if necessary, to hold the elastic in place in the wash.
