Stairs and landing- carpet or....what?!!

We have an old puggy who occasionally has peed on landing carpet and despite thorough cleaning with urine removing carpet cleaner etc it's stinky.
I would love to replace it but wish I didn't have to use carpet. Our stairs aren't nice oak etc just ordinary cheapy wood so not sure painting them would work. And what would I do with the landing. Really would like to avoid carpet.

What alternative is there??

I would use a stair gate to keep doggy downstairs - the more doddery they get the more the risk they'll fall and hurt themselves aside from peeing indoors.

We have bare wood - not esp lovely with runners on landing
I have nice stuff on walls to distract from floor !
I love the look of clean carpet but we gave a four storey house and I Wd be forever cleaning in and teens Wd spill drinks etc
I don't love it but the alternative is worse .
The other option is some carpets are washable even with bleach .
