Has anyone found a cheap and cheerful way to cover worn/dirty sofas?

We are in a rented house. The sofas have seen better days but are still structurally fine.

I'd love to cover them but find throws a bit messy and annoying.

Loose covers seem ruinously expensive.

Has anyone any ideas or recommendations?

I'm afraid I've always gone with cheap fleece blankets from ikea etc. My dh seems to be able to arrange them so they don't slip off as much, but they do my head in. I also managed to find some fairly cheap loose covers on line about £70 the whole sofa. Not ideal colours, but it looked a bit better.
