Sofa stretched out

Rosamund1 · 21/07/2016 22:33

We have one of those ikea knopparp sofas where the seat is basically fabric pulled taut. Someone heavy sat on it and stretched it out. It now sags in the middle. Is there anything I can do ?

I'm so sorry but that is hilarious! I have visions of a hippo sitting on it!

I was going to buy one on my last visit but didn't and now wish I had!

They must have been awfully fat to have stretched the fabric!

Do they know they've wrecked it?

I would be fuming if it was a fat greedy slob who did it but if it was someone who has gained weight because of physical or emotional problems I would not mention it to them.

Not sure if you can buy the covers on their own, maybe look on eBay

Hmm

What do you propose? A therapist's assessment and full medical? There's bound to be someone out there who specialises in sifting the deserving fat from the undeserving fat.

OP is it pure cotton or synthetic?

cheeseandmarmite15 · 05/08/2016 03:56

The op knows the person so knows why they are obese.

If you are obese through greed and being a slob then you are selfish for plonking your fat arse down on seating which you can possibly damage because of your excessive weight.

Hi, it's synthetic. It was a friend's partner who was a big girl and I did not get round to asking if she had a hormonal imbalance, was a comfort eater due to childhood trauma or just greedy. The fabric base seems to be some sort of nylon.

Synthetic sounds less hopeful. And is the base a kind of nylon webbing? Has that stretched too?

Rosamund1 · 05/08/2016 13:09

Just 5, I think I see what you're getting at; if it had been cotton I would have tried to wet it then a hair dryer to try and shrink it. It's a nylon sort of webbing as you say. Just like with my spaniel ears it seems that once stretched out there is no going back.

Grin

Yes, I would have given the hairdryer thing a go for cotton. (Not mammaries sadly. SadGrin)

It's a possible an upholsterer could do something with it, but at ikea prices that probably doesn't quite add up.

If it was me, I'd give IKEA customary care a ring anyway and ask if they can suggest anything. You might be lucky and get someone exceptionally helpful.
