School sweatshirts have chemical smell

I've bought my son some sweatshirts from his new school and they have a terrible chemical smell. I've washed them twice and hung them out on the line to air but they still smell awful. They are currently hanging up in the spare room and now the room smells too. Don't want to complain to the school and look like a troublemaker. How do I get the smell out?

Given that you have washed and aired them, I would mention it to the school. You are not a trouble maker for raising such a concern.
