Have You Cleaned Really Manky Carpets Using Green Products ?

Our Carpets are pretty filthy and we cannot afford to replace them . My SIL has recently cleaned her cream carpet by hiring out a "rug Doctor" cleaner and I was really inspired to get on and do ours.
The problem is I have read a magazine article which says that most carpet shampoos contain carcinogens such as formaldehyde . Great this is where ds and dd spend a lot of their time , rolling around or spread out on the floor. Dd is asthmatic as well.
Has anyone successfully cleaned their carpets using "green" products and would you reccomend them.

what about getting them steam cleaned?

Oati
I am not sure if that would lift all the dirt , also can you steam clean wool carpets?

these people do a carpet shampoo - I bought some a while back but haven't used it yet as I have yet to find somewhere I can hire a machine without nasty chemical glop already in it.

Thanks Oati and Tooticky - i will look at the links when I have got dd from school.
Tooticky will let you know if I find a suitable cleaner to hire.
