Dishwasher tablet question

A couple of times I've opened the allegedly-clean dishwasher and seen that the thingy has not popped open, so the plates have been washed with no soap.

Do I...

a - wedge the tablet in the tray with the lid open

b - put the tablet somewhere else entirely

c - something else?

Is the dispenser bit clean and free of tablet residue? The tablet normally dispenses into a little plastic bit at the front of the top basket so you could put it straight in there I suppose

The dishwasher at work does that periodically - I stick the tablet in the cutlery basket and it seems to work.

I put it on the cutlery basket.

Our dishwasher is the same I just chuck the tablet in the bottom now, don't bother with the flap thing. Works fine.

We're in agreement that the tablet doesn't need releasing at a specific time during the cycle then? Great :)
