Permanently filthy floor - despite almost daily mopping, What can I do?

Our kitchen floor (Karndean - a sort of upmarket vinyl floor) gets cleaned almost daily (miss the odd day but we must average 5 days out of 7)

It is swept, it is then swiffed with a flash dry wipe and finally mopped with warm water and ecover floor soap.

It looks clean afterwards but just suppose half an hour later (after it is dry) my daughter walks in there with either bare feet or her clean white school socks - the undersides of her foot are black with muck. Where does it come from? - I have literally just cleaned the floor an hour before!

What can I do?

Is vinyl flooring a muck magnet? If I replaced it with terracota tiles or something similar would that lessen the problem?

I recently bought some stuff from Lidl which you apply after washing & drying floor. It's not polish exactly but it kept my floor cleaner for longer. I do have ceramic tiles . You can use it on vinyl though.

It's in a white bottle with a blue cap.

oh all that swiping and washing sounds like a faff. You want it to look clean yes but a three-step programme every day is hard work

I clean my floor 'properly' (with a mop and bucket) once a week

the other times I just sweep the worst bits, swipe over a damp one of these (don't even need cleaner) over the dirty bits and stuff the pad in the washing machine

takes about 3 mins

(buy your dd some slippers btw!)

I really need that microfibre mop for my wooden floor....

But you mop your floor properly once per week - is it clean then? Would it pass the 'white sock test'? - since mine doesn't even after mopping!

UCM - I'll look out for that product

where i work we have karndean too.... its a no shoe house so my socks appear balck at the end of each day...

even after the cleaners have just been its still dirty if you wipe it (for example with a cloth if a bit of tea is spilt on the floor)

imo the only way to ghet it REALLY clean is to get down on hands and needs with a microfibre cloth and actually do each little bit and get the whole floor really clean

(anotehr hosue where i work they do this about every 6 weeks in the kitchen...

hands and knees is the only way IMO

yes it is very annoying!

get rid of the kids.

Or staple dusters to their feet?

sanchez · 14/01/2007 14:04

HMC I have exactly the same problem! I have laminate throughout the downstairs, and despite cleaning it twice most days (morning & evening) it is NEVER clean. I hate letting DS crawl about on it as I thinks he's going to get filthy. I've got about 4 different mops, everytime I see a new one I buy it to "see if it works"! Got a dog & cat too, which probably don't help!

handlemecarefully · 14/01/2007 14:09

I've got 2 dogs sanchez so I know what you mean.

NannyL - hands and knees scrubbing?!? OMG! - my floor space downstairs (kitchen karndean floor and oak floor elsewhere) is vast so that is going to take for ever

the white sock test?

are you mad?

it's a house, not a laboratory

VelmaDinkley · 14/01/2007 14:10

I blame the dog.... & wet weather very day

VelmaDinkley · 14/01/2007 14:12

still love the dog tho!

foxinsocks · 14/01/2007 14:14

I think you're probably cleaning it too much. If you did it say once a week, then you probably wouldn't notice how dirty it was. Also, as someone else said, either let the kids keep their shoes on or shove them in slippers (then you really won't notice ).

sanchez · 14/01/2007 14:14

Might get the dog some microfibre dirt magnet socks. That'll do wonders for his street cred in the neighbourhood, but might keep the floors cleaner!

interruptingsheep · 14/01/2007 14:17

Do what I do - only rarely wash the floors. At least then you don't feel so bad when your socks get filthy because at least you know it is filthy

sanchez · 14/01/2007 14:24

Mine always looks minging aswell - wouldn't mind if I could only see how bad it was on my socks!
