Dyson or Henry hoover?

Apart from the obvious difference in cost which hoover do you prefer and why?

If Dyson - which one would you get?

Or can you recommend another brand?

Upright/cylinder?

I have no pets but 3 DD's that have long hair and that gets everywhere.

We have a dyson it's so cumbersome and doesn't seem that superior suction wise. I've used Henry hoovers and want to get one.

As well as our upright dyson though, we have one of the cordless ones which is amazing for a quick whizz round and I use that mostly now. I think you can get one that is specifically for people with hairy pets too!

We have a Vax multi that can be used to clean carpets, it's a god send.

I have a Henry and so far it's much better than any Dyson I've ever owned, and I've owned a lot.

Here lies my problem! I already have a Henry - it hoover's well but it such hard work, DD's all moan about it. Oh and it smells as soon as I turn it on (change bag regularly too!)

So technically nothing wrong with my hoover but am just wondering if it was worth investing in an upright Dyson!

Henry's are difficult to use on carpet. Have you thought about buying the turbo brush? Makes it a lot easier to use on carpets and picks up hair easier. Cheaper than buying a whole new vacuum.
Only downside is you can't use the turbo brush on hard floors, so you've got to switch the tools around a bit

Neither would be my choice, for an upright you can't really beat a Sebo, I have the X4Extra, which I love using. Very maneuvrable, excellent suction, good filtration from triple lined bags which last for ages, (they are used in hospitals), and the cleaners go on for ever. Not cheap, between about £250 - £300, but I wouldn't go back to anything else.

Rabbit - I think I have that head somewhere! Never used it. I have a little hoover head at the moment as I found it was better than the traditional head.

I've used Dyson, Vax, Sebo and Henry and it is a Henry everytime. You need a choice of heads for the Henry, but I've found it to be the best at actually picking up. Good with building debris too!

I loath Henry with a passion, piece of crap. It takes up tons of room and does a shit job. I've bought an upright Vax and it's brilliant

Neither, I'd go for a Sebo X4 too. It makes my previous Dyson look useless.

Miele. Pisses all over both - only a Sebo comes close. I have a Miele cylinder vac and it's amazing.

We have a Dyson. We really miss Henry!!!! So less cumbersome and easier to empty too.

I bought a dyson then switched back to my old Henry! Fab Hoover I wouldn't buy anything else now.

I've used a Henry once, all I can think is that people who have about them must enjoy hard work

Out of the two I'd vote Dyson but I always get Miele as they're so reliable.

We've got both a Sebo & a Henry. The Sebo was passed down from my in laws and is 20 odd years old. The Henry is our garage vac and used for cleaning out the cars & DIY mess.

I don't find Henry too difficult to use at all, although it's not easy to use on carpet as the upright but the same could be said for most cylinders. It's better on hard floors than the Sebo though

nibblingfingernails, the turbo brush makes a massive difference on carpets. Definitely worth giving it a try before buying a whole new vacuum. If Henry is smelling, try sucking up some baking soda. That will neutralise any bad smells

We've got a relatively new henry which replaced a sebo. I really dislike it. It's heavy, awkward to move and smells bad. The lead annoys me. In fact everything about it annoys me.

We have hard floors downstairs but carpet upstairs and I hoover upstairs (DH does downstairs) and find it doesn't seem to pick up well at all. Is there an attachment I should get (seeing comments further up this thread about a turbo brush)?

JemTheAngel, Henry's are great on hard floors but not too brilliant on carpet without the turbo brush. We got a Henry Xtra because it comes with the turbo brush and a softer hard floor brush

I have the Henry Xtra - that would explain me having that head! hmm.....

nibblingfingernails, dig it out. You won't be sorry. It makes a massive difference. You don't need to use it on high power with the turbo brush either. We use it on car mats, does a brilliant job

Asked DH. Apparently I am using the turbo brush already.

Not a Henry but an old Vax that I used to clean up building rubble, I think I put some laundry powder into the middle so that when it is switched on the sweet clean smell of laundry filled the air through the filter. Worth a try. But mine was bagless.

I had a Dyson DC04 in 1999 in purple and lime green. Loved it. Suction was a bit pants in the end so upgraded to a DC33 animal. Hate it. No stretch in the hose so the Dyson either hits the back of your legs or it tips over. Using the wand is much more difficult and harder to do the edges of a room as it is hard to point the wand downwards. I have learnt to live with it but will change it for a Miele C1 when I can.

So I would recommend a Miele. There are loads of videos on YouTube of people reviewing vacuum cleaners
