Is it basically chuck it out unless it's useful or brings you joy ?

Do you need to read the book?

Yes definitely read the book, it makes a lot more sense and not a difficult read.

There is a method so that by the time you come to hugely sentimental items you are a machine.

Def have a sit down with the book.

I'd recommend reading the book too.

I feel it works better if you think things through before you start. Begin at the end. Look around and think about how you want your house to look. Where do you want things to be. Nicely displayed or hidden away in cupboards and drawers.

Search on line for the sub-categories list and start with a small manageable category while you learn the method and see the benefit. It is all very well to say, "take all your clothes out of the cupboards and drawers" but, realistically who has the time for that.

The most useful thing about the Kondo method is having, 'the same things in the same place'. If you read the Kondo 10 thread you will see stories of people finding, 20 sellotapes, 12 cough Medicines, 10 unused toothpastes. We have mess because we do not have method.

Lastly, once you start, don't worry too much about buying storage solutions. You may think you have culled enough, but once you get into it, you will probably find that you go back and cull even more.

That's true that you go back and do a cull again & again. Also I've just used shoe boxes etc for storage.
