Bosch vs. Sebo vs. Miele vs. Something else. The search for the perfect vacuum.

Small terrace house with two flights of steep stairs, mostly hardfloor with carpet on the stairs, 4 humans, 2 with long hair and 3 small dogs, 2 of which shed.

I hate housework and pay teenage DC to do it so hoovering gets done on a somewhat erratic basis.

We had a dyson, I hated emptying it, it constantly got blocked and parts broke before it was even out of warranty so not impressed.

We have a Henry, love it's sturdy simplicity but it's so heavy, a real pain lugging it up and down 2 flights of stairs.

Currently have a gtech Vram. It's light and love the fact it's cordless but it can't do the stairs, is not good at edges and bulks at anything bigger than a pea. I thinks it's just not heavy duty enough for us.

So my perfect Hoover would be cordless, bagged and easy to use on steep, dog hair covered, carpeted stairs.

As this appears not to exist could anyone suggest the next best thing?

An impossible dream then?

I normally recommend Sebo's but if you only have carpet on the stairs, an upright would be pointless.

I would go for an entry level Miele cylinder. You won't need the Cat & Dog model if you don't have lots of carpet.

I have a Miele cylinder. Not too heavy and plenty of suction. I still have my old Sebo cylinder (now in our self contained flat) but it is heavier. They never go wrong! I have wood,, rugs, ceramic and carpeted floors. No problem for the Miele. I tried a GTech. It was the biggest load of rubbish. It just pushed the fluff etc around and did not "ram" it into the small compressed nuggets at all. It went back. A Miele does a decent job for similar money. I do have a Dyson hand held for those really hard to get crevices!

I have Sebo (around 20 years old now) and in this house we have wood on the ground and second floor, with carpet on both staircases and throughout the first floor. We are two adults and a Sheltie and the Sebo works a treat - I would never have anything else. My Mum gave me a Dyson which she could not get on with and it needed emptying very regularly - it is now used to vac the car out, which it just about copes with.

I was thinking Sebo cylinder but the cleaning ratings on the AO site are E for carpet and D for hard floors! The Bosch scores much higher, anyone know why?

I wouldn't take any notice of the performance ratings. The Sebo uprights get F ratings for emissions but they use S class hospital grade filters. Looking online, it seems there's no set criteria for the tests, so everyone is doing something different.

I can honestly say our Sebo upright picks up way more than an A rated Dyson and it's easier to use.

I suppose it's one thing to try and test vacuun in a lab but quite another when you're using it at home.

I haven't regretted buying our Miele cylinder - it's easy enough to use on the stairs ( and I struggle to carry most things due to disability) and copes well with my long hair, it's also sooooo quiet compared with the old Dyson we had.

I always say get a Miele if you have lots of stairs and a Sebo if you have lots of carpeted floors. I stick by that. I've used both, along with a Henry and Dyson(s) - they are by far the best.

And I loathe vacuuming...

I've had a miele for over 10 years. I love it as it is great for stairs, and is really light and easy to use. We had mainly hard floors in our last house and have carpeted here, it worked well on both. My mum has a sebo and fell carrying the darn thing down the stairs! She's tried to offload it to me many times but I find it too heavy and more suited to large carpeted rooms.

I had a miele then got a Dyson. Would go back to a miele in a heartbeat. Waiting for the Dyson to break....
