What removes tar??

My son had stepped in some tar in a car park. Only a small amount but his brand new Startrites look ruined! Scrubbed them with some cif and hot water to get the worst off but it's still tacky and black in the cracks. What can I use to get it off??

Never tried it but I have been told you should harden it by cooling with ice. Once hard then peel or chip it off

Butter or cooking oil are solvents for tar.

Baby oil also works.

Petrol.

Maybe try some sticky stuff remover. Not sure if WD40 might work.

I'd be wary of using petrol or WD40 on something a child will wear, plus they smell strongly. With butter or oil you can go over the area with some washing up liquid in warm water to remove any grease residues - don't get the leather too wet though. Let them dry then give them a good polish.

Thanks for all your replies, it's only on the soles thank goodness. I'll try some of the above once we get back from out wet bank holiday break!
