Have tried warm soapy water, silver cleaner and everything else I can think of.

Any ideas?

gin.

Apparently any alcohol will help dissolve grease.

toothbrush and toothpaste (also very good for diamonds) - what have you got on it that won't shift?

PanicPants · 04/01/2007 20:08

It's just very dull. (It's my engagement ring) and has completely lost it's sparkle.

Have got some gin, so I might try that now, and if it doesn't work I'll try the toothpaste.

ah
it might not be dirt

platinum develops a duller patina with wear - every scratch leaves a groove and the gouged out metal kind of piles up on either side - like dragging your finger through soft butter.

I quite like the 'satin' look my rings have developed but if you want to regain the mirror finish you'll have to take it to a jeweller and have it polished - they smooth all the rucked-up metal back down again so it is just the same as when first bought - it's not like abrasive so won't wear the ring away.

So do you think I shouldn't try the gin or toothpaste? Will they damage it?

They won't damage it at all (I use toothbrush and toothpaste regularly to get the yuck out of the settings), just don't be disappointed if they don't bring it up to a mirror finish.

Ok, will give it ago but not expect miracles.
