Receipts!

My ipad has broken & John Lewis (understandably) won't help as I can't find the receipt! So annoyed with myself, I think I may have chucked it out by mistake with a big pile of others.
I need a better system going forward. Where do you keep receipts & how long for?

Bank or CC statements can work as proof of purchase, I think. Officially you should not need a receipt if you can prove you bought it somehow. Check consumer rights.

Thanks ghost I've tried that but they said no bank statement as it would only show that I bought something in JL but not exactly what. So gutted that my lack of organisation has resulted in such an expensive mistake.

Still worth pursuing if the IPad is faulty. If so, and the statement shows the cost of the IPad (ie. You didn't buy anything else at the same time), then from what I understand they absolutely should accept that as Proof of Purchase.

Wow very odd, did you hear that from customer service or a cashier? I can't think of a retailer in Canada that can't reverse check purchases. Once when I paid cash, the till security camera was reviewed, which was time consuming and creepy.

It was from the technical guy in customer services. To make matters worse I part paid with gift vouchers 😩

Oh dear. It could still be worth kicking up a (polite) stink. On Twitter, or Facebook.

Disclaimer: I know fuck all about this really, but if you can figure out the exact day you bought it, know how much was covered by vouchers and have a statement to show the rest, then that seems like a pretty damn good proof of purchase to me.

I think for big purchases like this, it's almost always worth buying online. Even if you then pick it up from the store. Then you always have the email trail if shit comes to shove.

Do you use a MyJohnLewis loyalty card? Because it'll so it keeps a record of all your purchases online.

Try taking it into the Apple shop. We did this when DS1s iPad had a problem and when they checked it, they told us it still had some warranty with John Lewis on it! (That's where we got it from, and DH hadn't realised it was still covered, took it to JL and they did whatever repair was needed).

I used to work for JL. Customers asked for duplicate receipts all the time - and copies were provided without problems. If you know the date you bought the iPad and can tell them how you paid (cash, vouchers, card), they can retrieve your transaction and receipt details without much difficulty.

If you call up your bank they can give you a transaction number which you can then give to John Lewis and they will be able to trace your purchase. I've done this before when I've lost receipts for cameras and other things.

CoCo i have done exactly that and the Apple woman told it me it had a fault that couldn't be repaired &'would need replacing. She then tapped in the serial no. which brought up on her screen that it was bought in John Lewis. I asked her to send that to me on an email & she said she couldn't due to data protection!! She then sent me an email to confirm there was a fault with it & wrote 'customer believesit was bought in John Lewis' which I thought was most unhelpful as I know it was bought in JL but she was implying I wasn't certain!

Sputnik thank you that is very interesting. How far back would JL be able to do this for though as I bought it 16 months ago? How can I make this happen as the 'unhelpful' guy at JL said they definitley wouldn't be able to trace it. I know there was a 5 year warranty on it as that's one of the reasons I bought it from there.

You'd be best phoning them Jemster and asking for a copy receipt. Your call will go through to their call centre where queries like this are dealt with routinely. If you have as much info as possible to hand - date, amount, card details etc, it should be handled quickly and easily. I think the 16 months timescale should be ok - I've been away for a couple of years, so my memory on this part is a bit hazy.

I would ask JL again, they're usually really helpful. Did you have a JL card? That might have recorded what you bought too

You may have already looked/though of this: have you still got the iPad box? Is the receipt in it?

Going forward, I have a concertina file for my bills and keep one for receipts. I have a plastic folder for purchases over £50 or electronic items. I hope you get it sorted.

Staple receipt to piece of A4 paper and file in lever arch folder.
