The instructions say that the quick cycle is only for lightly soiled stuff. Can I get away with using it for an average wash?

No. Quick wash is only designed to wash, rinse and spin small loads. So it won't take in enough water to wash, will leave a lot of residue behind and ramp up to full spin in a very short time causing excess strain on the motor.
