Computer upstairs or downstairs ???? Help me decide please

I need to move my computer. It is currently in the corner of the living room end of long living/dinning room and I hate it there.

Where ever I move it to I need to pay either for new wired connection (as cable is too short) or wireless connection. Both will cost similar price, £60 to have it moved or £65 ish for wireless.

Question is, do I move it upstairs into my room or down to the dinning room end of the room in the corner ????

I am incapable of making this decision for some reason.

HELP

Get a wireless laptop - save you making the decision

I have mine at the end of the living room too, but with 2 kids I can see the screen from the sofa and monitor what they are up too and if they have a waring thing come up I can shout instructions rather than getting up, plus at night I can watch TV while puting. Isn't very attractive though.

nutcracker · 28/12/2006 21:15

I would love a wireless laptop, but unfortunatly it is way way down on my list and i'll probably get one in about 10 years.

You have a point skribble, I can see everything from here. Suppose I could just buy a nicer desk for it to go on, perhaps one with doors ?

Only problem is that I needed to move it to fit a wall unit in that i've got as it won't go anywhere else.

Much safer for all concerned imo to have your pc downstairs somewhere not very private.

foxtrot · 28/12/2006 21:19

I have mine in a little room at the end of the living room/dining room. So i can use it whilst keeping an eye on the DCs, and pop in and out during the day to do stuff. My DCs use it too for cbeebies etc. I wouldn't have it upstairs simply because it is on all day and in use quite a lot.
Could you get a hideaway unit so you don't have to look at all the clutter that goes with it - i think a flatscreen looks ok on a desktop but its all the other stuff that makes it untidy.

nutcracker · 28/12/2006 21:20

Ok so if I keep it downstairs, is it worth paying £60 to move it from one end of the room to the other ???

I think I should move it first and check it looks ok there at least.

weve got ours in the living room. it used to be in the bedroom but i didnt like the kids up there using it alone and didnt want to be stuck up there with them! also, dh was using it for hours in the evening and i missed him!

now im typing away here while dh is over there and the kids can play on it while i keep an eye and also get on with other stuff.

i wouldnt have it upstairs again, cant keep a good enough eye, and its isolating.

Skribble · 28/12/2006 21:20

Perhaps a nice cupboard type unit to hid all the bits, mind you we tried that and it didn't have enough room for all the other stuff, but I have all the household paperwork file here and brochures, tax stuff directories etc.

foxtrot · 28/12/2006 21:21

good idea to do a furniture shuffle first. Don't know about wireless connections - are they reliable?

nutcracker · 28/12/2006 21:23

Not a clue foxtrot, my brother sorts all that out for me. I could have the wired connection moved though if not.

Just get a big extension cable... £20 max. id say.

nutcracker · 28/12/2006 21:24

Right am gonna shuffle furniture around and see what it looks like.

Hmmm, if it looks good then I may not be back for a few days LOL.

It's not that wire that won't reach it's the actual wire that goes from the wall to the modem.

We have a phone cable trailing from opposite end of the room for broadband and all runs on a bar plugged into one socket.

foxtrot · 28/12/2006 21:27

quootie i was thinking the same - in our old house i had a trailing wire - ok if you can hide it.
Was just looking at workstations - you could probably afford a laptop for nearly the same money as a decent piece of furniture LOL
Someone had a thread yesterday about the joys of a wireless laptop IN BED - now that's something to aim for - -horizontal MNetting

Dare I suggest Ikea .

JanH · 28/12/2006 22:13

I just got this for DS2's bedroom - not that there is a computer to go on it yet but it's really solid, good-looking, useful storage, only 104cm wide, and went up in about 1½ hours.

Alternatively before buying that I was considering this which is also pretty neat.

No doors on either though.

foxtrot · 28/12/2006 22:20

mine's on this which is from the same range and cheap as chips!

SparklyXmasKat · 28/12/2006 22:21

I have this one from IKEA!!! lol everyone has a ikea desk!! Its in the living room in the corner.

southeastastra · 28/12/2006 22:23

we've got the mikael one too! small one upstairs big one downstairs! there are quite a few routers on sale at the moment too

MrsSpoon · 28/12/2006 22:28

My DS1 has the desk that JanH has just bought for her DS2, it is great! Would highly recommend it.

Judy1234 · 28/12/2006 22:52

I hate electronics in my bed room, won't even have a TV. I want it to be a calm sleeping place so I'd keep it downstairs. Gret wireless though... invaluable for my student children who have laptops.

ellanevemum · 28/12/2006 23:01

After nagging from my DH we ditched the PC and although I was intially so reluctant we now have wireless laptop which is so much better! now I and the kids can use it anywhere. I am a complete convert. I also agree with you xenia. My bedrom is the one place in the house that i try to keep technology free.

nutcracker · 29/12/2006 10:07

Ok I am now offically nuts.

I moved the computer and it looked fine, moved the huge unit etc and that was that.

Got up this morning and moved it all back LOL.

That desk Jan is the exact one I have been after for months now. Will have to wait until the online ordering starts next week though.

LOL at all the furniture humping. Are ikea going online?
