AARGGH - this is driving me bonkers!

I have tried lots of things but nothing works.

We have coat hooks and a wooden box behind the door for people to hang up coats and put their shoes on. It is a constant mess - coats fall down and aer just shoved in that area - dp has coats without hooks so hangs them over bannisters, there are too many shoes so they spill all over the floor - it is impossible to manage and I hate it. I cannot work out what other people do with their shoes and outdoor stuff - I just want somewhere tidy to keep it. It looks awful to walk inot the house and be confronted witht that mess.

Where do you keep yours?

We have an understairs cupboard with eight hooks along the wall for coats. I have four plastic coloured boxes on the floor at the back for shoes. One for each of us.

charliecat · 27/12/2006 20:41

Mouldy damp under the stairs cupboard which isnt good for anything else other than shoes.
And coat hooks, 8 for 4 of us with 27 coats

TEEstheCEEsontobejolly · 27/12/2006 20:41

The coats we are waering on banister - rest hung up in wardrobes.
Shoes we are wearing that day live on stairs, 1 pair each out at a time maximum. Rest of DC's shoes live in wardrobes and mine and DP's live under the bed.

Kidstrak · 27/12/2006 20:43

we have hooks behind a door, if any coats fall off then there are too many on it and i make them take any unworn coats upstairs to their wardropes, shoes i hate, shoes are taken off when we all come in and they are put away in their rooms at the bottom of a cupboard, we are a slipper household

NAB3 · 27/12/2006 20:44

We have a wicker basket I bought from Sainsbury's for £10 for the kids shoes. They hang their coats on a children's coat hook board, which we got from Argos for about £8, at their height level and we hang ours on the other side of the hall. Our shoes are in a wardrobe.

DaddyCoolLickingAtYourToes · 27/12/2006 20:48

i'm not sure. the butler just grabs them off us when we walk into the foyer. where he puts them, i don't know.

expatinscotland · 27/12/2006 20:49

They hang off an over the door peg thingy in the hall.

B/c I can't stand them all on the floor and that!

Shoes go in a shelving unit in the hall.

Wouldn't it be lovely to have a proper mud room or foyer and a hall tree?

Yeah, well, that's just too fucking hard cheese all around.

DimpledThighs · 27/12/2006 20:50

Ideally: in the utility on the hooks

In reality: on the banister, over doors, on top of chairs, wherever the DTs dump them.

Sigh..............

DaddyCoolLickingAtYourToes · 27/12/2006 20:53

expat.... i have a mud room . it's big and beautiful and full of.... mud.

DaddyCoolLickingAtYourToes · 27/12/2006 20:54

and skates, snowboots, snowpants, jackets, hoovers, cleaning products, recycling, canned food, beer.... aren't they great!?

DimpledThighs · 27/12/2006 20:57

well mine have adopted the 'mud room' idea adn made mine a mudhouse - hence the frustration!

have a cupboard in the hall plus a wardrobe & hatstand - still on the floor after school though!

LucyJones · 27/12/2006 21:02

cupboard under the stairs

Steppy1 · 27/12/2006 21:02

a dedicated cloakroom cupboard with a rail for hanging everyday coats, shoe rack for shoes and a shelf for hats, gloves, scarves etc etc.

"Wellygogs" and outdoor mucky coats and boots on hooks and boot stand in back door entrance to utility room

wrappingpaperBOwZZAndribbons · 27/12/2006 21:16

We have a coat stand on the hall. I try and maintain a rule of 2 coats per family member (so 8 plus scarves, hats etc) so that it is not too manic and there is space for visitor's coats. So other coats are put in wardrobes. Shoes are put under the coat stand, although that applies more to the children than us. For instance, DS would leave his school shoes there Mon-Fri and then put them in the wardrobe at weekend. DH/I would probably only leave them there when we were in/out of the house. All other shoes are kept in wardrobes, which is a bit of an issue if you have tons of shoes like me. Also we have a double hook on the back of the utility room door for scruffy coats/fleeces and a plastic box in the ut room cupboard for the kids wellies/our gardening trainers.

time4me · 27/12/2006 21:46

Try ikea, they have a good selection of shoe racks. My lot would never go upstairs with shoes clutched in hand, however the shoe rack is in the porch so they take them off there.I like the idea of having a dedicated area under the stairs so I might try that as the porch full of shoes gives a bad first impression although I do try to pair them up so it looks a bit organised. These sort of little things can get you down so I thinks its a valid question, never mind the butler

wrappingpaperBOwZZAndribbons · 27/12/2006 21:50

I do think that having adequate storage for all shoes/coats by the front door is unrealistic in most homes. So we have space for some and then every so often have to rehouse back to the wardrobes.

HazelnutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 27/12/2006 22:04

We have 2 hall ways. 1 at the front door and 1 at the back door. Good coats and shoes on coat and shoes rack in the hall by the front door. And older/outdoor play coat on a rack in the hall by the back door and old/play shoes and w/boots on the floor under the coats. Dc are very good at taking their shoes and coats off and leaving them in the right place
DD will tell people off if they go in the house and have not taken their shoes off. Dunno if I should or

Posey · 27/12/2006 22:13

Just like TeeCee, we have one coat each on the banister, rest live in wardrobe or coat stand in our room. One pair of shoes each in hall, rest upstairs (though this has a habit of becoming out of control with boots, trainers, school shoes, slippers...)
I would love a hall big enough for a coat/shoe cupboard, or a boot room like they have in posh houses!!

octobermum · 27/12/2006 22:22

Did have a shoe rack under the stairs, fil is now making into a toy cupboard for me.

Have moved shoe rack to by the front door where dh has always left his shoes, he now puts his shoes under the stairs where the rack was for 3 years but he could never find it when it was there .

Coat hooks will be put behind the front door as well, and only have the coats you are wearing.

notasheep · 27/12/2006 22:25

daddycool prob has a trademans entrance too
