washing dry clean only curtains

I have some filthy-bottomed patio door size curtains which say dry clean only.....there are 100% cotton...should I really not wash them myself?

cotton shrinks though, if they shrink 5-10% it will be noticeable.

Bottom line is if it ruined them would it be a disaster or an oppurtunity?

I've done it and they look ok, did them on a quick 30 degree wash so hopefully they'll be ok, not end of world stuff though!
