Cleaning a kettle but NOT descaling it!

Hello! I want to clean the inside of my kettle. I don't live in a hard water area so it's not got limescale, it's just got weird brown gunkiness on the bottom of it. Lovely huh? So what would be a food safe way of cleaning it? TIA

That might still be limescale.

Try boiling with a bottle of vinegar poured in.
