New white bath mat now has grey spots after being washed...help

Brand new white bath mat, first wash tonight in an all white wash, which I'd put some vanish whitener stuff in. Comes out of the washing machine with 4 grey splodges. I put it in again on its own on a quick wash/dry setting, and the spots are still there. Can I bleach it? If so, How? Any other advice?

I'd wash it in a hot cottons wash with no detergent. Sounds like it's detergent residue. Towels, etc don't need much in with them and should be washed at higher temperatures.

Hot wash with powder detergent, not liquid. Vanish powder stain removers have bleach in them, so they might help.

Check your washing machine too, does it need cleaning? Low temps and liquid detergents cause mould and residue to build up on the seal and under the drum.

Are the bearings knackered and leaking oil?

Thanks both - I'll try the no detergent / powder detergent options. I do use liquid tab things so the machine may well need a clean.
