Dishwasher cycle

Hi everyone
We recently bought a house and the previous owner left his dishwasher. He said it worked but having used it we find that water does not completely drain from the bottom of the machine. We cleaned the filter but it didn't make a difference. We have now removed the waste pipe into a bucket and have started a cycle but 40 mins into it no water has drained out. We have never had a dishwasher before so were wondering what the normal stages of the cycle would be. Does water drain throughout the cycle?

Any information, suggestions or advice would be much appreciated!

I think you've been had. If it was working fine, you shouldn't have any pools of water at the bottom. You load, it washes, you remove.

I think the previous owner knew it was on the blink and so left it rather than pay for it to be removed.

John Lewis and Currys do a good remove and recycle service if you buy a new one from them.

It should go;

Fill.

prerinse

Drain. Fill

main wash

Drain fill

rinse

Partial drain. Dry. Full drain. End.

It takes quite a while over an hour are you leaving it for long enough to finish?

Are you opening it during the drying cycle? After the rinse, the machine stops and heats up to dry everything. It doesn't drain until after the drying cycle has finished

How do i know if the drying has finished? It says 0 on the display (counting down from 97 mins) but it shows a thermometer - which I assumed just meant it was hot. We ran a full cycle and no water came out at all :-(

I think that putting the waste pipe into a bucket could be causing another issue: the waste hose has to loop up by a certain amount (try to find the manual for the machine you've got online) in order for the machine to drain effectively.

If the timer says 0 and it hasn't drained at all, then it's definitely not working properly.

I'd do as wow says, we had a similar problem with our old naff dishwasher and it turned out to be the drain hose syphoning, we clipped the hose to the bracket on the back of the dishwasher and adjusted it in the stand pipe. Right up till it broke, we never had an issue after that.

Are the dishes clean?
My trusty Bosch died after 15 years of abuse, and now have some obscure Italian brand one our friends were giving away - it washes as long as the thing isn't packed, but never gets 100% empty of water in the bottom. It's fresh water each cycle though and been going for 18 months of 1-2x daily use, so I'm not bothered.

The dishes seem clean but a bit soapy. I'm not sure how dishwashers work but I wonder if there's a sensor in there that prevents the machine overflowing - if no water is draining perhaps the machine doesn't wash the plates as much as it would? Still, it seems to do the trick and we just have to bail water out at the end. Just feel a bit annoyed that the previous owner misled us by saying it was completely functional.....

Something really isn't right if that's what you are having to do and it will be recycling water instead of drawing in fresh. You need to get a manual for it online and look at trouble shooting. If you can't get it working properly then work out whether it's worth paying to have it fixed or get a new one. You don't have to spend a fortune.
