Depends what you want it to do; do you want it to warm you or keep you cool for example?

I just use a cheap double duvet under my fitted cotton sheet for softness and snugglyness. Works great!

I was looking at mattress toppers online yesterday and couldn't decide which to get, memory foam or spun polyester? I am hoping for something to make the bed feel More cosy and a bit softer to sleep on.
John Lewis has a polyester one that has good reviews, M&S had any memory foam one.

ive got a £99 ikea one. It just makes the bed a bit more comfy. If youve got a good mattress you shouldnt need much more.

We have a couple of IKEA ones. Dd1 has a thin one, DD2 a really thick one. They both love them, but DD3 said it was too hot.

We have a JL memory foam one it's fab at making a comfy bed (particularly great whilst I'm pregnant and nothing is comfortable) memory foam can be a bit warm though and you may find you need a lighter duvet whilst using one.

We got the most expensive memory foam topper IKEA sell, and it's really great. Being IKEA it wasn't that expensive, given what they cost elsewhere, and it's excellent quality. Can recommend it.

We went to IKEA and hauled them off the shelves to lie on first - the difference is huge between their top and medium ranges, we found. We got it to rescue a crappy mattress on a good and expensive sofa bed, which it has done remarkably well. My Mum bought one for her own bed after sleeping on it.
