tips on how to get rid of the smell of dog wee on a thick rug

My cat weed on my mattres a couple of years ago. I could have killed her, it absolutely stank! I did a lot of online research and in the end did this:
I first scrubbed it with a solution made from lots of "bio"- washing powder and water and then tried to suck/squeeze as much of the moisture out of it as possible by putting clean towels on it and standing on it. I then sprinkled a shed load of bicarbonate of soda on the still-damp patch, let it dry out completely and hoovered it up. Amazingly, the smell was gone after a couple of days!

Thanks, just scrubbed it with persil bio now. Will put the bicarb on tomorrow!
