Mould on bedroom walls/ceiling

Hi,

We moved into our house 6 months ago so it's our first winter here.

I noticed last week that some mould spots had appeared on our bedroom ceiling in the corners. I wiped it all down with a damp cloth and sprayed the affected area with this but this week it is just growing back again! I've also just noticed some in the bathroom.

How can I get rid of this? We have started wiping the condensation off the windows every morning but already feel like we're fighting a losing battle...

yep, it happens. Daily window wiping is a law-of-physics thing after cold nights. (Didn't happen here last night but a warmer front has gone through)

do it, ventilate for a short time, leave cloth outside to dry. Dettol Mould spray will deal with the mould. It will come back.

Sometimes loft insulation gets missed at the corners, maybe check up there? And yes, open the windows and try not to dry clothes etc indoors if you can help it. Another thing is after bath or shower, open the bathroom window and shut the door, otherwise all the warm damp air goes round the whole house.

Urgh. I thought you might all say that...

Don't dry washing inside either as that causes a damp atmosphere.

We get all the windows full of condensation.

So, is it due to crap windows? Or what?

We get mould and condensation in our house, as do our neighbours. We run a dehumidifier during the day which seems to help a bit. I don't mind the condensation, but I hate the mould on the ceiling!

hmm. This is a part very old, part 1980s house. We get condensation on windows after a cold night. Also occasional mould round window edges on cold older walls. No mouldy ceilings though and I assure you I like a hot bath! No extractor fan but iffy double glazing in places so draughts.

doesn't newer double glazing have trickle vents?

Just seen and written another post about mould. Would have been me last year but saw an ad last Xmas and decided to look into it. It is a company that puts something that circulates air around your house, stopping condensation and mould. Really pleased with it and did loads of research as was cynical at first. It is Called Envirovent. They seemed to have reps dotted around but as I was given a 5 year guarantee that's good enough for me if it all goes wrong. Happy so far

CheeseEloise, you don't have a link to that company do you? I googled and couldn't see anything.

Get a dehumidifier, from argos or b and q, run it 24 hours a day and see the amount of water it collects! It will suck the damp from the air whilst you investigate further and may well solve the problem.

How long do you open the bedroom windows each day?

Does your bathroom extractor fan work effectively?

Ventilate, ventilate, ventilate. Windows opened as much as possible every day, especially bathroom, kitchen and bedrooms, avoid drying laundry inside or use a dehumidifier.
