Does anyone know where I can get a hanging file frame?

Hi

In a bid to sort my mounting pile of paperwork I had (almost) accepted that I need a filing cabinet. However, I had a quick google and I think I could make this work.

I would need to get the boxes and the frame. I have googled and the frames all seem a lot more expensive in the UK than in the US ($12 for 2 in the U.S. or £30+ for one in the UK Angry).

Does anyone know where I could get anything cheaper?

Thanks in advance

Try eBay. Ikea's cheapest filing cabinet is £55 complete. Don't forget that the filing cabinets and accessories in IKEA will be A4 in size so don't buy anything foolscap to go in or with them.

This one is very cheap, just 8.75 to collect in store from Tesco, but it is not likely to stay in stock long.

if you find a place that sells used office equipment, they will have a warehouseful of old filing cabinets and desks, and a skipful of the frames.

Lurleene that cabinet is listed as currently unavailable.

If you can't find what you need, another option is to use one of the Really Useful boxes. It has ridges along the side for hanging filea and is cheaper and more portable and stackable than a filing cabinet. I've had mine for over ten years.

if you ask on your local Freegle, you may well get one. It's the sort of thing that gets thrown out in office refits, and people take them home. I've scrapped a few.

You can also often get filing cabinets for next to nothing if you collect them. The trick is to lift all the drawers out so the empty case is light enough to carry. I'm typing this with the PC standing on a 2-drawer cabinet.

Thanks all. I SO don't want a filing cabinet in my house (ugly)!

Piglet - I will have a google and see if I can find any used office places around here.

Devon - yes, that was my fall back but I really liked the subtle internal filing frame so I could have a pretty box that doesn't shout FILING! It's crazy that a few pieces of metal can be so expensive (here, not the US ...)

What about one of these? Not cheap, but nicer than a filing cabinet.

Upinthestars · 12/09/2015 17:57

hugo - wow that's lovely but sadly out of my price range Sad

Beware buying filing stuff from the U.S. - their normal paper size is 'Letter' which is slightly wider, but several centimetres shorter than A4. You would probably have to buy suspension files from the U.S. too to fit the file frame and they might not be big enough for your documents.

Thanks. I think I may have to go for a regular filing cabinet Sad
