How to vacuum a deep pile carpet?

One of the bedrooms in my house has a carpet with a really deep pile. However, my Dyson fails to pick up any bits of sock fluff etc, and lovely as the carpet is, it looks awful. I spent 45 mins last night with one of the vacuum attachments, crawling around on the floor trying to scrape off the visible fluff.

Is there some trick to vacuuming a carpet like this?

Get a decent vacuum! Dyson are useless on deep pile carpet. The cleaner head just bobbles over the top of the carpet and doesn't get into the carpet fibres.

You need a good upright on it like a Kirby or a Sebo. I think there's places you can hire them from.
