Those annoying plastic ones that curl round and round and children love.

I know there will be tears if I throw them away but their looking a bit gunky inside despite my efforts to clean them so dear Mumsnetters how do I clean them?

soak them in a bowl of hot water and bicarbonate of soda? it's what my mum used to do for my inhalers as a child.

Thank you Catmiini I will try it. If that fails they go in the bin tears or no tears!

I'm thinking that perhaps Hydrogen Peroxide might help to clean out the curly straws ...have to test that one out! :)

I bought I really tiny bottle brush from
Amazon for straws and the straws inside drinks
Bottles.

Turn tap on, stick one end of the straw in, let water flow out the other end.
If that doesn't work, I use the straw sort of like a pipette - warm, soapy water in a bowl, suck it up slowly with the straw, stop when straw is nearly full, blow water back out. Repeat a couple of times. You might misjudge and get soapy water in your mouth though Grin.
