Tumble dryer

Hello
Don't have one but now have 2 kids under 2 and am wondering how I'll cope with the washing this winter if I don't get one. My mother reckons it's essential, yet we've coped ok so far without one. Admittedly atm the washing is mostly drying outside. We also have one of those lakeland heated airers. How essential are they and will it change my life? Did your energy bill skyrocket?
More worried about that than the actual upfront cost of the thing.

I think if you had a spin dryer to get that extra pint of water out of the washing you wouldn't need to tumble.

I can dry a load on a normal airer overnight without the heating being on in this house. It wouldnt take as long in yours because you'll have to have the heating on with a baby.

I dry outside all year round barring any weeks when it just rains every single day.

I wouldn't ever not have a tumble dryer. I don't really use ours for clothes as most stuff dries fine on a clothes airer, but for big items like sheets and towels, it's just so much easier.

Modern dryers don't use near as much electric as they used to. When tumble dryers first started getting popular, they used to drink electric. But that's not the case anymore. We used to be on an electric top up metre and the dryer barely dented it. In fact, my laptop, mobile phone and kettle had way more impact than my dryer ever did.

Providing you're not running it constantly, there's nothing to worry about. Plus, you can get A & B energy rated dryers now, which you couldn't a few years ago.

Saddo that I am, I love my tumble dryer. It's a truly labour saving device and worth every penny. Modern TDs are not very expensive to run. However, do not buy a washer dryer. They are the work of the devil and rubbish.

It broke recently during a rainy but warm week and with three dc it was a nightmare trying to dry clothes

I miss my tumble dryer but no room for it in current house. Luckily stuff dries very quickly here even without the heating on. I take all sheets and towels to MIL's to tumble dry as so much nicer. I'm hoping there will be space for one when we move.

If you have the space for it, I would say get one. You don't have to use it if the weather is good, but it comes into its own when you can't dry inside.

Ours doesn't cost much to run, and we have it on almost every day in winter (4 sets of bedding and towels to wash each week).

Didn't have room for one in my utility room so was going to go without. Managed to fit one in the kitchen-so relieved. More to stop having washing hanging around than the actual drying. Still try to dry outside but it makes a huge difference.
