Cobwebs on beams

We live in a very old house with beams everywhere and a large population of spiders. I don't mind the spiders themselves too much, they are the spindly legged ones which eat the hairy legged fat spiders.

The cobwebs, however, are prolific! I have a Lakeland goat hair decobweb brush which is good for reaching high and getting them down. The problem is that a lot of the time they stick to the rough surface of the beam. Does anyone have any tips for removing them from beams cleanly?
